Making Visible Music

Empowering critical consciousness, technological literacy, and social emotional learning through a collaborative music and visual art program

Making Music Visible is a set of open-source lessons for teachers and/or independent cohorts of youth to use to create expressive analyses of music.  The goal of the project is to provide technical and analytical skills in music and art so that learners can make connections across their diverse musical interests, thereby coming to understand each other’s tastes, and the connection of their music to the history of social movements.

  • The lessons in Making Music Visible deploy visual music theory using a children’s book, John Coltrane’s Giant Steps re-mixed by Chris Raschka.
  • The learning opportunities in Making Visible Music are structured around making expressive interpretations of youth’s music using artistic, musical and digital tools.
  • Information about connecting the dots between ways of looking at music and art as community cultural wealth are listed for students and teachers in the Making Musical Connections section
